Dear Friends,

This week I had the chance to try a new food that could probably be seen on one of those strange foods documentaries.

Here is the story.

I was leaving my house one evening on my way to church. All of a sudden lots of bugs started flying up from the ground; this made my neighbors really excited and they ran over and started catching as many as they could. I became very curious so I stopped and watched. Then Mama Major explained to me that they were going to eat them. (insert surprised/curious facial expression here). “Oh they are very good.” She said, along with all the children. The youngest one was so excited she was dancing around. Then she explained to me how to prepare them.

First you put them in water to clean them, and this also kills them. Then you put them in a pot over the fire. You add salt and a little bit of water and fry them up. Then, you have a yummy snack.

As I left for church she told me she would give me some to try when I got back. I thought, okay that should be interesting, and it was. When I got home from church my neighbor came over with a small pot of the termites (the bugs they had caught earlier) for me to try. I was very nervous but I tried a couple, if nothing else, to say I’ve done it and cross it off my list. And I’ll just say now that I’ve tried them, its not something I will do again. Been there, done that. The didn’t taste bad, they didn’t have much flavor really.

Or, it could be that I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that I was eating a bug, to actually think about what it tastes like.

Although Sunday was Mother’s Day, it was kind of hard to tell. Holidays are not really celebrated here like in the U.S. At church it was Women’s Ministries Sunday, so all of the Women’s Ministries groups had a time during the service to share what they have been doing.

I went up with the Jr. League to show what we have been learning. Some of the things the girls have learned are how to make some cakes, to make orange juice, to make small sacks to carry cell phones, to embroider, different activities around the house, and Bible lessons.

I was surprised that there wasn’t a time during the service to recognize the mothers.

Thank you again for your continued prayers and support,

Tracy Pilewski
