Despair

Despair becomes hope,

bondage becomes freedom,

the search becomes realization and fulfillment.

Scenes from Church

March 25, 2008 – 10:27 am

Dear Friends:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We were hesitant the first time we laid our hands to the winter pruning of our rose garden. Our instructions left us with nothing more than a small, thorny, twiggy stump. This contradicted our natural instincts because the remnant appeared devoid of life and potential. But we followed the instructions and impatiently waited for spring.

You can imagine our relief, pleasure, joy when we say the first bud of life. The bud would become a shoot, the shoot would become a stem, and the stem would blossom as a rose. Something from nothing. A rose from a twig.

Winter pruning can be a literal event. It can also be symbolic of circumstance - a prolonged family illness, the consequences of personal moral failure, an imposed demand from “them” to me. Whatever the case, we all need the promise of spring. We need the winter cold to turn to warm. The snow to melt and turn to water. The twig to become a rose.

It’s no mistake Easter occurs at the dawn of spring. It overcomes the bleak winter - a season appearing to be void of life and potential - with the resurrection of new life. New faith. New hope. New love.

The significance of Easter is the free gift of resurrection life we’re offered from the One who gives us cause to celebrate this holiday. The free gift is wrapped in all the promises of God, and full of grace.

So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.
His going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the rain,
Like the spring rain watering the earth.
- Hosea 6:3

It’s our prayer you will enjoy the potential of spring and the promise of Easter.

In faith, hope and love.
