To Boldly Go…
March 5, 2007 – 8:00 amFor the past several evenings we have been captivated by the beautiful, San Diego sunsets. We have the privilege of living near Mission Trails, and the rainbow sherbet skies set against the contrast of the rock strewn hills are magnificent. Breathtaking. Awesome.But as beautiful as the sunsets are, they pale in comparison to the beauty God has intended within us. Though we’re not perfect - in fact we’re far from it - we have tremendous capacity to be lovely and do incredible things.
St. Francis was born at Assisi in 1182. After a carefree youth, he turned his back on inherited wealth and committed himself to God. He established the rule of St. Francis, which exists today, during which time he wrote a prayer still quoted today:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek:
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. -
- Saint Francis of Assisi
St. Francis’ prayer is a bold one because in it we ask for strength to give of ourselves so we can meet the needs of others. Sometimes we’re called to turn the world upside down - to bring into the world the exact opposite of what we find there.
Think about the situations you face each day. Are there those requiring a new perspective? Can you turn your world upside down through peace, consolation, hope, light, and joy?
We believe you can! Remember you have tremendous capacity to be lovely and do incredible things.
Kind personal regards.
